Ter um cérebro maior não é garantia de ter um QI mais alto, já que o que importa é como está estruturada a massa cinzenta – é o que revelou um extenso estudo que cruza os dados de dezenas de pesquisas anteriores.

Os dados mostram claramente que os cientistas “superestimaram” a suposta relação entre o tamanho do cérebro e o rendimento intelectual, explicou nesta quarta-feira (14) à agência APA o diretor do estudo, Jakob Pietschnig, da Universidade de Viena.

O pesquisador afirmou que o fator decisivo é “a estrutura do córtex, o mesencéfalo (cérebro médio) e o cerebelo, e o fato de que a matéria branca esteja conectada com a matéria cinzenta de uma forma ótima”.

O estudo foi publicado na revista “Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews” na semana passada, depois que Pietschnig e sua equipe realizaram uma metanálise a partir de mais de 88 estudos, com mais de 8 mil participantes.

Os dados mostram que os homens, apresar de terem um cérebro maior do que o das mulheres, não têm mais habilidades cognitivas.

As pessoas com um cérebro anormalmente grande, condição conhecida como megaencefalia, têm em média um rendimento menor nos testes de QI, afirmou Pietschnig.

A mesma lógica aplica-se ao reino animal, afirmam os cientistas, que dão como exemplo o cachalote, que com um cérebro de nove quilos deveria ser o animal mais inteligente do planeta, mas não é.
